Biography
Dr Mia is an agronomist with PhD and postdoc from the University of Sydney, Australia. His research is focused on broad aspects of agronomy including rice germplasm collection, maintenance and improvement while he is also passionate about understanding the nutrient (e.g., carbon and nitrogen) dynamics in soil-plant systems. Specifically, he installed facilities for biochar and soil analysis at PSTU. He have discovered important mechanisms how biochar influences soil nutrient cycling. Using this knowledge, he developed biochar enriched fertilizers and secured an agreement with a leading fertilizer company in Bangladesh to commercialise it. With his over one decade of dedicated efforts, Dr. Mia collected/ retrieved over 1000 local rice landraces grown in the coastal area of Bangladesh. While working in Bangladesh, he received over $390 thousand in research funds. For his contributions, he was honoured with the best researcher award in 2022 at PSTU. He worked at visiting Professor/researcher for Tohoku University, Japan and University of Newcastle and University of Sydney, Australia while he is maintaining an outstanding collaboration with 15 universities in Asia and Pacific including Tohoku University, Japan, University of Putra, Malaysia, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Indonesia, University of Newcastle, and University of Sydney, Australia.
