Dr. Md. Saiful Islam

Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam was born in Bogra, on 08 September, 1981. He obtained B.Sc.Ag. (Hons.) and M Sc (Ag) in Soil Science from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). He completed his Ph.D. in environmental sciences from Yokohama National University, Japan under the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT). Dr. Islam for his outstanding contribution to the field of environmental chemistry, was awarded several very prestigious post-doctoral fellowships, e. g., Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) from the Japanese government, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) at the University of Tokyo, Japan, Post Doctorial Fellowship from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and Post Doctorial Fellowship from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
Dr. Islam has made a substantial contribution to the published literature on a fundamental understanding of toxic elements and microplastics in the environment and associated health risks. He has written ~220 research articles published in some reputed international journals. His many research articles are highly cited by international scientists who are working in the fields of biology, environmental chemistry, and toxicology. The output of the 'Google Scholar search shows that the research work of Dr. Saiful Islam already received ~12400 citations with h-index 56 and i10-index 149.
Dr. Islam has been awarded several national and international awards/prizes. The most important of these awards/prizes are (for example): (i) Gold Medal Award-2014, for young scientist from Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Yokohama, Japan, (ii) Merit Award-2010 from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), (ii) Professor A. Karim Memorial Award-2007 from BAU, (iv) UNDP Young Scientist Award 2012 from Japan in recognition for his contribution on the sustainable development and environmental management, (v) Best Research Young Scientist award-2014 by the Yokohama National University, Japan for outstanding research discoveries on the removal techniques of trace metals from industrial waste/sludge and (vi) Merit Award from the Vice Chancellor of BAU in 2010 for outstanding results in Masters of Science (Ag) in Soil Science, vii) Bangladesh Academy of Sciences “Gold Medal Award” for Junior Scientists in Biological Sciences.
Dr. Islam presented invited talks and chaired scientific sessions or worked as a member of the Organizing Committee or International Advisory Board in many international conferences on biological sciences held in different countries (Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Madagascar, Canada, USA etc.,). He was also appointed an Editorial Board Member of the “Annals of Agricultural and Crop Sciences” (USA), “International Journal of Environmental Chemistry” (USA), Journal of Ecology and Toxicology, Journal of Trends in Horticulture etc.
Dr. Islam’s research interests are epigenetic and post-transcriptional regulation of nutrient transport in plants, development of metals-resistant plant varieties and identification of arsenic detoxification mechanism in plants, concentrated biogeochemical cycling of phosphorous (P) and trace metals in soil, humic acid modified nano-hydroxyapatite and vanadium (V)-doped birnessites for trace metals scavenging from the environment, in trace metals especially environmental toxicology, emerging pollutants in the environment and sustainable development, Chemical speciation and bioavailability of trace metals, organic contaminants, and various toxic chemicals in the environment for sustainable management, human health and ecological risk assessment and nutrient management in the agricultural soil. Dr. Islam supervises many MS students and is actively involved in many professional networks/organizations at home and abroad. Over the years, he has established research collaborations with many scientists in Japan, UK, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, South Korea, the USA, and Canada.
