Dr. Mahi Imam is an expert in Insect Molecular Physiology and Insect Immunity along with extensive research experience and notable achievements in these areas. He obtained PhD on 'Secondary Metabolites of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus Suppress Insect Immunity by Inhibiting Dorsal Switch Protein 1 and Phospholipase A2' from Andong National University, Republic of Korea. His PhD research focused on molecular basis of insect immunity against entomopathogenic bacteria. During PhD, he designed a new pathway (DSP1 pathway) required to activate innate immunity of insects (Spodoptera exigua and Tenebrio molitor) against entomopathogenic bacteria. In addition, he purified some secondary metabolites of entomopathogenic bacteria which suppress the insect immunity by inhibiting immune mediators as well as binds with the crucial immune protein of insects named dorsal switch protein 1 (DSP1). During PhD tenure, Dr. Mahi Imam also investigated that bacterial metabolites also kill insects by DNA degradation, damaging the hemocyte or other immune cells. During the PhD tenure, Dr. Mahi Imam learned about gene prediction, gene edition by CRISPR/cas9, dsRNA preparation and application for gene silencing, overexpression of genes, cloning of gene, recombinant bacteria construction, expression, extraction and purification of recombinant protein. Dr. Mahi Imam also achieved expertise on DNA extraction, RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, SDS PAGE, Thin layer chromatography, freeze drying, sonication, bacteria culture, organic extraction, rotary evaporation, insect rearing, bioassay, Cell line culture and many others. Dr. Mahi Imam’s research has also been published in many reputed journal including PLOS Pathogens, Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Physiology, BMC microbiology, PLOS One, Journal of Agriculture and Food Research, Heliyon, Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology, Journal of Natural Pesticide Research, etc.
